…in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The CRPF Nouvelle-Aquitaine is committed to implementing demonstration pilot projects to improve the quality and ecological connectivity of forest ecosystems including ripisylves.
Actions are located in the municipality of Cherves-Richemont in región of Nouvelle-Aquitaine (ex Région de Poitou-Charentes).
As part of the forest ownership concerned by the project, the owner and the manager planned to intervene in forest plots located within the Natura 2000 site of the Vallées du Lary et du Palais, Zone Spéciale de Conservation (ZSC) and a type 2 ZNIEEF. Before any intervention, the objectives related to the special character of the Natura 2000 site were recalled (reference to the Objective Document) and in particular to sustain and encourage forestry management adapted to the biological issues specific to spontaneous afforestation (aulnaie, frênaie, …) and their associated species (Mink of Europe and Otter) by:
The maintenance of the integrity of the waterways, which requires the preservation of the physico-chemical quality of the water and its natural hydrological regime. Alluvial woodlands and wet meadows are directly dependent on this integrity.
Maintaining a favourable catchment area for Mink of Europe, providing this endangered species with suitable habitat and an accessible river system.
It is in this context that silvicultural choices have been chosen on this site, they allow to take into account the natural habitats present and the species present with an objective of preservation, including the creation of a refuge cordon, made up of woods and branches, for the Mink of Europe. They also make it possible to maintain a displacement corridor by maintaining a riparian linear and adapt silvicultural work to the sensitivity of the natural environment, in particular by eliminating chemical treatments during maintenances. Dead and senescent trees will also be conserved as habitats for many species.
This work was implemented by the Alliance-Forêt-Bois forestry cooperative.
In conclusion, this project allows:
Preserve a linear of 340 m of riparian forest
Conserve 1,40 ha of alder cuttings
Conserve 1,30 ha of a poorly wooded slope but with oak and mature natural pines
Create a refuge cordon approximately 340 m in length
Plant 2,70 ha with a goal of producing quality wood
